Now that you know what ingredients work well and which products work better together for specific skin concerns,
serum-layering seems like an easy, straightforward path to great skin, right?
Before you get too excited, here are some rules and factors that you should take into consideration as well.
RULE #1:
SERUMS COME FIRST.
Serums should be applied first followed by moisturizers.
Moisturizers are usually thicker creams and oils that
create a protective layer over your skin
and will hinder the absorption of your serums.
RULE #2:
STICK WITH TWO.
As a rule of thumb, facialists don't recommend
layering more than two serums at once
as it
overwhelms the skin with an unnecessary excess of products on the face.
It also decreases the efficiency
and absorption of products to deliver results.
RULE #3:
START WITH THE LOW.
Once you've selected the serums you'd like to use together for your specific skin concern,
it is now time to decide
which serum to use first.
The rule of thumb is to always start with the product that has the lower pH level.
Apply low pH products (acidic) before high pH products (alkaline).
Products that are lower in pH level (pH 2.5-4) including AHA, BHA and Vitamin C absorb
better and should be incorporated first or earlier in your skincare routine while products
that are higher in the pH level (pH 4.5-7) such as Retinols, Niacinamide, Hyluronic Acid and
facial oils are more likely to be skin barrier friendly.
RULE #4:
SOAK AND MASSAGE.
You want your skin to get the most out of your products,
so make sure they are
completely absorbed!
To improve absorption,
wait a minute or two between serums to fully absorb
into your skin. You could also throw in a massage with
jade rollerto improve
blood circulation, and increase the rate of absorption.
The most important thing is to listen to your skin. If you experience any minor skin irritation, make sure to boost hydration and apply a moisturizer
after the serums. If symptoms persist, cut back on the active ingredients and try another combination.
There you go! We hope that this guide has made your serum-layering mission easier,
and we wish you a comfortable journey to healthy, glowing skin!
